Alfred Kurtz

It is with sadness, the family of Alfred Kurtz informs you that “Alfie”, of PO Box 5 in Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on September 24th with his wife by his side at the age of 100 years, 1 month, and 28 days. He was born on July 29th, 1920 in Erie, PA, the son of Alfred and Ida (Delmoe) Kurtz. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946, and received two bronze stars. After returning home to Erie, PA he fell in love and married AnnaBelle McKrell in 1948. They worked the Hotel circuit until they landed at the Windsor Hotel in Elizabethtown, NY where they stayed and raised their family. Al wore many hats after they took up residency in E’town. He worked as a laborer with Reale Construction, an electrician for Herb Hildebrandt and maintenance for the Essex County Horace Nye Home from which he retired in his 70’s. Not one to stop, he then hooked up with George Huttig where he began delivering parts from Ticonderoga to Paul Smith’s and also became known as “the Mailman” until his late 90’s when he finally retired. Al was a member of American Legion Post #551, VFW Post #5802, Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club, Elizabethtown Fish & Game Club and the Elizabethtown Fire Department where he also served as Fire Commissioner. One of nine children, he is survived by his wife, of 72 years, AnnaBelle, a son, Peter Kurtz, two daughters, Barbara (Joel-deceased) Harwood and Ann (Reggie) Whitney, five grandchildren, Paige (George) Saltamach, Clare Harwood, Hugh Harwood, Hanna Whitney and Emily Whitney and two great grandchildren, Henry and Etta Saltamach. He was predeceased by his parents, his eight siblings and their spouses. A graveside service with military honors will be 11:00 AM Saturday October 3, 2020 at Essex County Veterans Cemetery in Wadhams, NY.
