Bernard Roy "Barry" Miller

August 7, 1946 — August 8, 2020

Bernard Roy "Barry" Miller of 32 Market Street, Keene Valley, NY passed away peacefully on August 8th at CVPH in Plattsburgh NY, a day after his 74th birthday, with his family at his side.
Barry was born August 7, 1946 in Oswego, NY to Mary Agnes McHenry Miller and Burney Roy Miller, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Allen, who he married in 1977 in New York City. He is also survived by his much-loved son, Aaron Nathaniel Miller, his wife Stefanie Valovic and delightful granddaughter Olivia Rose Miller Valovic, of Keene Valley.
Left to mourn him are his sister Carolyn Jordan and her husband Alexander "Sandy" Jordan of Hingham, Massachusetts and his brother Richard Michael Miller of Wylie, Texas. Also nephew Michael Jordan and wife Diane of Hingham, Mass. and nieces Tamara Perrine of Wylie, Texas, Jennifer Jordan and husband Tim Eng of Boston, and Stephanie Jordan Brown and husband Adam Brown of Hingham - and a number of great-nephews and -nieces, who all enjoyed their Uncle Barry. He leaves two brothers-in-law, Daniel Allen and wife Ana of Toronto, Canada and Quito, Ecuador, and Thomas Allen of Belleville, NJ and Lempster, NH. He will be greatly missed by his wife's large extended family at Camp Echo, Lempster, NH.
Barry graduated from Oswego High School in 1964, received his B.A. from SUNY Buffalo in 1968 and M.A. from Villanova University in 1972. He began work on his PH.D. at the New School for Social Research in 1976. He was a Lecturer in Symbolic Logic and Philosophy at Villanova, Fordham University and North Country Community College. He was a Vista volunteer in Buffalo 1968-69.
Barry was a founding partner of University Movers in NYC 1973-1982. He was President and co-founder of Adirondack Maps, Inc., publisher of the Adirondack Series of Maps, 1982-present. From 1980 until his retirement in 2007 he was employed by Essex County Real Property Tax Services as Property Title Searcher and finally as Director of Real Property Tax Services and Geographic Information Systems. Under his leadership, Essex County became known as one of the most technologically advanced county real property tax offices in the state, as well as a leader in properly valuation assessment practices.
Barry served on the Town of Keene proposal committee for the Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center. He was a founding board member of the Adirondack Fairness Coalition, which successfully fought off the harsh recommendations of the 1990 Commission on the Adirondacks for the 21st Century.
Barry loved the outdoor life - cycling, camping, canoeing, cross-country skiing - and discovered the joys of RV travel to far-flung baseball stadiums and Civil War sites. In their newly renovated home, he enjoyed opera along with classic movies, and became known for his vegetable and flower gardens. To the horror of his Mets-loving wife and Red Sox fan sister, he remained an avid Yankee fan. We are grateful he got to see some of the 2020 baseball season.
There are no calling hours. Private services will be held at a later date. For his cats Snowy and Sweet Pea, and in remembrance of the many dogs and cats he loved over the years, donations in Barry's memory may be made to North Country SPCA or an animal shelter in your area.
