Carl A. Bigelow

Carl Bigelow, 84, of Keene Valley, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

Carl was born in the Keene Valley Neighborhood House, February 23, 1931 to Merrill and Grace (Stone) Bigelow. He was named Carl Arthur by Dr. Alphonso Goff.

He attended Keene Central School and graduated the Class of 1949. Carl earned a degree in Automotive Repair from Morrisville College, and returned to Keene Valley to work at the Keene Valley Garage. He was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served 2 years from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. Upon his discharge he returned to the Keene Valley Garage and later became the sole proprietor before retiring in 1996.

Carl and Patricia Ann Nye were united in marriage on December 7, 1957.

Carl is survived by his wife Patricia of 57 years; a daughter Susan Whitney and her husband Patrick. Two grandchildren Adam (Farrah) Whitney and Alison (Julius) Whitney as well as six great-grandchildren; Autumn, Josie, James Whitney; Laela, Juliet, Jaxine Barreto. Also Tia (Jeff) Preston and grandson Keir (Christina) Demars. Carl’s only brother, Merrill who lives in West Virginia and two nieces also survive.

Carl loved his community and was very active in many groups including American Legion Post 1312; Keene Valley Rod & Gun Club, Keene Valley Fire Department; Keene Valley Congregational Church and was a member of the Masons. He served on the original Board of Trustees at the Keene Valley Neighborhood House and was President for many years. Carl was also a Director on the Board for Champlain National Bank and was vital in the opening of the Keene Branch.

Carl Bigelow’s greatest love in life, aside from his family, was working on automobiles and especially vintage antique cars. He was the founder of the Annual Flaming Leaves Car Rally held on Marcy Field for nine years.

Donations may be made in Carl’s name to the Veteran’s Memorial Fund (Keene Community Trust); Keene Valley Fire Department (new ambulance fund); or Keene Valley Congregational Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Marvin-Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street in Elizabethtown.
