Carol Jean Allen of Plattsburgh and the world died January 30, 2022. She was born in 1954, the fifth child and only daughter of Margaret and B. Fuller Allen, late of Plattsburgh. She was an artist, caregiver, and devoted friend to many. Her death leaves a large hole in the universe.
Carol often said, “I was born a spiritual seeker.” By that she meant that something bigger is going on than what we deal with every day. She wanted to learn more about spirituality, God, Love, Life, the bigger picture…
At age 17 Carol discovered Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation (TM) just two weeks after graduation from Plattsburgh High School. She knew immediately that this was what she was looking for. After a few false starts, she became a student at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, where she graduated with a BA in literature in 1981.
Following college, Carol worked at various Maharishi University campuses worldwide, including in Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., the Philippines, the Netherlands, and the Catskill mountains. She was trained by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as a teacher of the TM technique in Como, Italy and Seelisberg, Switzerland. After her training, she returned to Plattsburgh to teach TM and commuted to Burlington by bike to teach there.
In 2005 Carol returned from assignment in Boone, North Carolina to care for her aging parents for what turned out to be five years. They each passed away in the comfort of their own home with the best loving care. This proved to be a turning point in Carol’s life, and in 2007 the Clinton County Office for the Aging awarded her Caregiver of the Year.
Carol took up watercolor and sketching. She was one of the founding members of the Adirondack plein air drawing group, 13 Sundays in the Sun, and she delighted many with her gentle and delightful watercolor pictures of local landmarks and natural beauty.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 2017. According to Carol, “Here is the important thing: Do what you love, love what you do. And then if you learn you are near the end, you will be fine. No regrets!”
Carol was so grateful for her partner, Dr. Robert Davis, who was her sweetheart and unfailing caregiver over the last four years. She was thankful for her friends. She wanted you to know that if she knew you, she loved you.
In addition to Dr. Davis, four older brothers survive Carol: Thomas Allen of Arlington, Massachusetts, Richard Allen of Essex, Vermont, Lawrence Allen of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Arthur Allen of Clinton, Connecticut. Her family also includes four sisters-in-law, seven nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
Burial took place February 2nd at Spirit Sanctuary in Essex, NY. A celebration of her life is planned for the spring.
