Conrad "Connie" Hutchins

November 25, 1932 — July 7, 2021

Conrad “Connie” Sherman Hutchins,88, of 73 Water St., Elizabethtown passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 7th at his home surrounded by family. He was born November 25th, 1932 in Elizabethtown, NY, the son of Eldred M. and Doris C. Hutchins.
He grew up on a hardscrabble farm on the Wadhams road in Elizabethtown and graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1950. He entered the US Army and served for two years before returning home. On April 7th, 1956 he married Janice King in Willsboro and they eventually settled in Elizabethtown.
He worked for the Grand Union in Elizabethtown and Willsboro and worked in road construction for many years. He went to work as a caretaker for the Slatkin farm in Essex in 1984 where he continued to work until 2019 when he “retired” at the age of 87. He was also self-employed for many years as a house painter.
He was a long time member of St. Elizabeth’s Church where he also served caretaking the cemetery and grounds. He also served as the town historian as well as being involved with the zoning board. He was a long time fan of the LA(and Brooklyn) Dodgers, the NY Giants, and the Duke Blue Devils. Connie could be seen daily in Stewart’s and other local shops where he enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed collecting antiques and war memorabilia and was extremely devoted to his family. He was especially proud of his “war room”.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Sharyn (David), Suzanne, Sandra, and Sara (Anthony), sons Stephen, Scott (Sarah), and Stuart (Aran). He is also survived by a brother, Philip (Sharon), and a sister Rebecca. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and a daughter, Stacey Louise, who died tragically in 1981, and two brothers Arthur and Walter
Funeral arrangements are in care of Heald Funeral home in Elizabethtown. There will be a Catholic Mass celebrating Conrad’s life on Wednesday, July 14th at 1:00 P.M. at St. Elizabeth’s church in Elizabethtown. Friends and relatives are invited to assemble at his house on Water Street immediately after to enjoy food, beverages, and stories.
The family would like to thank Dr. R. Demuro and High Peaks Hospice for all their professional and compassionate care during Conrad’s illness.
