Dorothy A. Downey, 80, of McCutcheon Lane in Saranac, died July 6, 2017 under the care of her loving family and Hospice of the North Country. She was born in Detroit, MI on March 8, 1937 daughter of the late Joseph and Elsie (Schweinberg) Chini.
The family soon moved to Long Island, where she attended Hempstead High School, graduating in 1955. She next attended SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She continued her education earning a Master’s Degree in administration and supervision. She began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Cadyville where she remained until her retirement.
She loved to laugh, travel and go to camp.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of sixty years, John C. Downey, three children John T. and his wife Robin of Cadyville, Patrick and his wife Susan of Cadyville, Julie and her husband Michael Lawrence of Vermontville, a sister Madeline Derwin of Johnstown, a brother Tom Chini of Ellensburg, WA., seven grandchildren and one great grandchild Lilly and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Redford Hillside Cemetery.
Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country.
