Elizabeth "Betty" Kroeplin

d. January 23, 2022

Elizabeth “Betty” Kroeplin at died Sunday night, January 23, 2022 at Champlain Valley Senior Community in Willsboro, NY after a long illness. Betty was well cared for at home by her sister Jean Kroeplin Kerrigan, and by the visiting nurses of the Essex County Nursing Service until the summer of 2021 when Jean and Betty moved to the Champlain Valley Senior Community.
In her final months Betty received compassionate care from the staff there and from her sister-in-law Claire Kroeplin. High Peaks Hospice provided care and comfort in her last days.
Betty was born in East Orange, New Jersey on July 27, 1932. She attended St. Aloysius Grammar School, Mount St. Dominic Academy, and Caldwell College for Women, graduating in 1953.
In 1953 Betty began work at the Hoffmann-La Roche laboratories in Nutley, New Jersey as a ‘bench’ chemist, one of the only women to work in the lab at that time. She spent her entire career there, advancing in the company, and working with the team of chemists who developed medicines including Versed, Valium, and many of the antibiotics and lab tests we use today. She retired in 1983 after 30 years.
In 1985 Betty moved to Westport New York and opened the Grey Goose, a bed and breakfast, serving visitors to the Adirondacks, including parents of Camp Dudley campers and Meadowmount School of Music students. Betty shared her home in Westport with Jean for two decades.
Betty remained friends with high school and college classmates, and had many close friends in Westport: members of the Garden Club and the Parish of St. Philip Neri, and friends and community at the Dogwood Bread Company in Wadhams NY. These relationships kept her connected and provided her with love and care at the end of her life.
Betty was the family archivist, noting relations going back more than a century and organizing photos and memorabilia for each family member. She was an excellent knitter and seamstress and kept a beautiful perennial garden. Her niece Meg and nephew Edward benefitted from Betty’s love and care, from childhood adventures to countless cards and attention throughout their lives.
Betty is survived by her brother, Edward and sister-in-law, Claire, of Westport NY and West Caldwell NJ, nephew, Edward Kroeplin of St. Albans VT, niece Meg Kroeplin and partner Erika Mijlin of Amherst MA, and great-nephew, Harry Oakes-Kroeplin of Amherst MA and Asheville NC.
Betty’s care is entrusted to Heald Funeral Home in Elizabethtown New York and Shook-Farmer Funeral Home in Roseland NJ.
There will a be service on 11:00 AM at Farmer Funeral Home in Roseland NJ followed by burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover NJ. A remembrance luncheon is planned in Westport in the spring.
