Kenneth C. O'Connell

January 5, 1925 — April 9, 2014

Kenneth C. O’Connell, 89, of Champlain Street in Plattsburgh passed away Wednesday April 9, 2014 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh on January 5, 1925 to the late Charles and Pricilla (Dignard) O’Connell.

Kenneth joined the United States Marine Corp at the age of seventeen and received a purple heart while serving active duty in World War II. He was a three time Grand Knight at Council 255 Plattsburgh Knights of Columbus and was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW and the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge. Kenneth was retired from NYSEG after 38 years of service.

In his earlier years, Kenneth was an outstanding athlete in baseball, football, bowling and golf. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and didn’t miss a radio or televised game. Kenneth loved to spend his retirement years as a snowbird in Punta Gorda, FL. He enjoyed playing weekly pinochle with friends and spending time with his family.

Kenneth is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of nearly 67 years, Edith O’Connell; his son, Michael and his wife, Deanna, of Plattsburgh; his daughter, Mary Strong and husband Douglas of Plattsburgh; four granddaughters, Jessica O’Connell of St. Petersburg, FL, Angela DeMartin of Rochester, NY, Pamela Strong of Plattsburgh and Kaitlyn O’Connell of Plattsburgh; and 5 great grandsons, Jarrett, Braden, Jae, Joey and Austin. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce (O’Connell) Kelley and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Derrick.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated April 14, 2014 at 10:00 AM from St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be Monday May 5, 2014 at 9:00 AM in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Heald Funeral Home, 48 Court Street, Plattsburgh.
