Peggy Jane Chandler

d. May 8, 2016

Peggy Jane Chandler of Westport, N.Y., passed away on May 8, 2016, at the age of 65. A free spirit when she married her husband of 47 years, Ben, Peggy was an animal lover and a lover of the outdoors with big dreams and a heart of gold.
Stricken by cerebellum degeneration in her twenties, this rare, progressive disease gradually took Peggy's ability to walk and to speak. Despite the challenges she endured, Peggy never lost her spirit, her heart, her will, her ability to laugh, her kindness, her courage, her love for dogs, cats and all things furry, nor did she ever lose her commitment and devotion to her husband, best friend, and caregiver, Ben.
Ben's limitless love and commitment to Peggy, and hers to him, are what dreams are made of. Very private in their lives, they fought this battle together, silently, rarely asking for or accepting help. Their devotion to one another was a testament of their love.
Peggy fought courageously for decades against her disease with Ben by her side always, caring for her every need, every day and vice versa. On May 8th, the disease prevailed and Peggy's war against cerebellum degeneration, and the suffering it caused her, ended.
Though Peggy is no longer with us physically, her beaming smile, smart wit, warmth, and love for Ben endure in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Every person she met was better because of her. Every animal she cared for through her own efforts or her support of agencies that save them, have lived because of her. The world lost a ray of sunshine on earth, but Peggy's brightness will shine forever in the hearts she leaves behind.
There will be no formal memorial or service. A moment of quiet to appreciate what we have is what Peggy might ask for. Life can deal you unexpected circumstances. Seize the moments you can to let those you love know it. Enjoy life.
Gifts in celebration of Peggy's life can be made to the Humane Society of the United States or to an animal rescue charity of choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court St., Elizabethtown.
