Robert Fenton Sweatt

July 19, 1920 — December 31, 2014

Robert “Bob” Fenton Sweatt, 94, passed away December 31, 2014. He was born in Flushing, NY, July 19, 1920, the son of the late Robert E. and Theo Barber Sweatt.

Bob married Catherine Goff in 1941, sharing 73 years together. They have two daughters: Sylvia McCoy and husband Jerry (deceased) from Schenectady, Cynthia Pratt and husband Mike from Westport and one son Robert R. and wife Ellen from Lewis.

He has seven grandchildren: Janine McCoy, Jeannette (McCoy) Miller and husband Jim, Erin (Pratt) Schroder and husband Ben, Robert J. Sweatt and wife Alicia, Sarah (Sweatt) Hackett and husband Derrick, Catherine (Sweatt) McCormick and husband Peter, and Diana Sweatt and friend Gordon Costin. There are thirteen beautiful great grandchildren: Anthony, Shelby, Colby, Lacy, and Haley Miller; Charlie and Chase Schroder; Charlie Ann, Connor and Robert Sweatt; Taylor and Wyatt Hackett; and Jacqueline Aurelia McCormick.

Bob had the chance to persue many careers. He was known as the ice man, milk man and mailman. At one time Bob ran a local taxi service. He worked at the Cross Garage in Elizabethtown. He was also a janitor and school bus driver for the Elizabethtown-Lewis school. He was a Justice of the Peace and councilman for the Town of Lewis for many years. In addition, he worked as a Fire Obsever on the Hurricane Mountain fire tower. Bob retired from the NYSDOT.

Bob had numerous hobbies. He collected antique cars, loved NASCAR racing, and was an owner/driver of a stock car. He would travel to various race tracks including Airborne Park Speedway. Bob even had a midget car speedway track on his property. He enjoyed painting on slate and was an avid reader. At times Bob even played the drums with his musical friends and family. His love of the outdoors was evident when he was throwing a fishing line into Barber's Pond or getting out the binoculars watching the geese, ducks and beaver activity. In the spring you could find him trucking through the snow tapping trees to make maple syrup. He enjoyed having domestic animals as there were always pets underfoot.

The family will receive guest on Sunday, January 4, 2015, from 1 to 2 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the Marvin-Heald Funeral Home, 7521 Court Street in Elizabethtown. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Donations in the memory of Bob may be made to the Lewis Fire Department or the Elizabethtown-Lewis Ambulance Squad.
